Default 4wd usage causing burnt odor

I am writing about a Toyota Sequoia, since there isnt a forum, I figured it is close enough to a Tundra.

Anyway, I used the 4wd today and began to notice a burnt odor in both 4wd H and L. This was the first time that I have had to use the 4wd for any extensive driving. The vehicle is a 2002.

Anyone have any ideas as to what the odor could be?

Hmmm, Maybe someone with more experience will chip in, I don't even know how these newer vehicles work anymore, but when my quad started smelling in 4wd it was just almost out of front gear oil in the transfer case/
